“A comfortable, friendly atmosphere! The Haven was a great find! We are normally tent campers but decided to look for a cabin because the weather was questionable. We had a cozy cabin with a large deck and a fantastic view of the lake! The cabin was clean and just the right size for two people. The double bed was smaller than we are used to and the mattress a little to firm for me. It was great having a small refrigerator, toaster oven, microwave and coffee maker right in the cabin. There was a charcoal grill on the deck. We went canoeing and hiking on the property. The owners, Warren, Karen and Maria were very friendly and hospitable! We definitely will be recommending The Haven to family and friends!”

“Return to Star Lake campus. We are very pleased to be able to go back to where we spent many weeks at this campus: teaching courses with other SUNY Potsdam faculty was a blast. We were sad when the college sold this property over a decade ago. The only down side (for us) was the wi-fi. Why spend time staring at a lap top when beautiful Star Lake beckons with canoeing, swimming, hiking, cool nights, etc. etc.? A secret gem of a vacation spot!

I believe credit should be given when credit is due… even when I am afraid that I may be giving away this secret gem of a vacation spot on beautiful Star Lake in the NY Adirondack Mountains.  The Haven At Start Lake has big plans and are renovating each cabin. The property is gorgeous. I rented “The Squirrel” cabin and it was so cozy! The bed was very comfortable. Both the lodge and the game room have giant fireplaces. The owners are super nice and you can see how much they care. I’m giving 5 stars because Yelp doesn’t allow 10. No doubt, my expectations were exceeded. The Haven at Star Lake was like a slice of Heaven! I truly hated to leave!

Review for The Lodge

The Haven lived up to it's name.

In August, 2014, my daughter and I went up to the resort for a long weekend. We knew the property’s back story (it was a summer camp for a local SUNY college that was left abandoned… and was under new, private ownership) and were expecting it to be simple and rustic. Since our trip was more or less spur of the moment and previous bookings had already been made, we stayed in the lodge. As of the that summer, three beautiful cabins were renovated and being rented. We were given a tour between renters, and they were adorable. They are a perfect balance between communing with with nature and modern convenience. We were not disappointed in the lodge, but the feeling is completely different. The lodge is essentially a dormitory. The beds (bunk beds) were comfortable and the linens were clean. They provided a pack&play for my daughter to sleep in. We slept extremely well, even with several of the other rooms in the lodge being occupied. The noise of people coming and going didn’t pose any problem whatsoever. It made me nostalgic for my college years. (Think college… but clean and without the belligerent college co-eds!) Additionally, we also sampled some of the catering while we were there. Everything we ate was delicious!
The Haven has everything you need to be active on the lake. The camp has access to the water with both a sandy beach and a boat dock. We took out canoes and paddle boats. They had a variety of other watercraft, but my expertise was limited. They had plenty of life jackets for people to borrow. My daughter loved splashing around in the designated swimming area. The best part for us was a sandbar that was a 5 minute paddle away. We anchored our boats and my 2 year old was able to splash around in water that was waist high. It was perfect for a game of water football.
Although we did not get around to it, there is a great fire pit on the property. Our last evening was wet, so we weren’t able to make a fire as planned. It’s on our list of to-do’s next summer. Instead we enjoyed watching the pristine sunsets over the lake from the lodge’s specious deck.
The property had much to offer from walking trails adorned with wild grapevines and raspberry bushes to a regulation-sized volleyball net that is set up and ready for a impromptu game. My daughter enjoyed the game room as well.
The Haven is a place away from the hustle and bustle of every day life. This wasn’t a commercialized resort, but one where you could go to unwind and enjoy nature.
The owners live on property (on the very top of the hill) and are readily available for any issues, but were not imposing. Throughout our stay there were people renovating the other cabins and doing landscaping. This didn’t interfere with our stay. In fact, I am really excited to go back next summer to see all of the improvements that were made.
As we left, the owners were meeting with a couple to discuss plans for their upcoming (fall 2014) wedding. I think the property would be perfect for a small family wedding! There are multiple buildings on property that could house the evening’s events!
I will be back with my family, for sure. We also have had talk with friends to have a reunion housed there as well.

It is a beautiful, laid back break from our hurried lives. The nature is pristine and the lodging is comfortable and clean.

We love this place. The only drawback for me is the wi-fi. I liked it better when there was no wi-fi, just the lake, the cool nights, the getting away from it all feeling.
